Many of us are in the position of having to ‘rehabilitate our horse’. We have discovered something is amiss. Whether that be from an accident, a recently diagnosed chronic issue, poor saddle fit or foot balance, or even as a result of poor conformation and breeding.

Then what?

Owners are often not given much more to go on than “Ground work and hills’ . Maybe some poles. Get a body worker. 6 weeks of no riding then start again. I asked one vet specialist why they so often recommend the dreaded Pessoa, and he said ‘Because most people don’t know how to lunge well’.

However, we as horse owners can learn.

We can understand how to do so much better than walk them up and down hills and lead them over poles (which could be entirely the wrong thing for your horse). And, we can get a much better understanding of what caused this issue for our horse in the first place. There is no point diligently performing 12 weeks of in-hand walking, then getting back on and recreating the conditions which caused your horse to break down initially.

In this 2 part introduction I will talk through some key points.

  • Understanding the diagnosis
  • Looking for cause and effect
  • Assessing your own competence and skills and working on your own ‘What Next’
  • How your horse’s emotional state impacts on their physical state and vice versa
  • What does healthy movement for the ridden horse entail?
  • What things can you do on a daily basis which will contribute to a healthier body and mind
  • Developing your observational skills
  • Planning a rehab which actually meets your own horse’s individual needs
  • Why movement is your friend
  • Why gadgets are not anyone’s friend
  • Balancing realism with optimism`
